Mozambique Change Project workshops will take place in 2022. In the meantime, teacher educators who are interested in starting work on ESD teacher education Change Projects can consult other examples from the projects being developed in participating countries, and make contact with the UNESCO office to share their work.
We will also be sharing examples of earlier ESD Change Projects that were developed in Mozambique from the ESD alumni network.

Change Project: Production of Three-dimensional Teaching Models for Teaching and Learning Based on Recycled Material
University of Save (Xai Xai)
In this project a Community of Practice was formed and discussions held. The CoP agreed upon a topic which was: Production of Three-dimensional Teaching Models for Teaching and Learning Based on Recycled Material. The change project focus was on improving the quality of teaching and learning by upcycling waste. In addition secondary school teachers/trainees were taught to use teaching models in their classes to make them attractive and interesting. They were also taught about solid waste recycling with a focus on obsolete refrigerators. Project underway at the time of reporting.
Boanne Institute of Agriculture
An introductory meeting was held at the institution with members of the local CoP and scholars from the Environmental Research and Learning Centre, Rhodes University.
Boanne Institute of Agriculture was established in 1979. In 2002 the institute used modular industrial energy and chemistry financial management. This is a TVET institute that was eager to join the SST programme. So, our visit to this institution was to introduce SST.
The project was in progress at the time of reporting.
Maputo Industrial Institute
An introductory meeting was held at the institution with members of the local CoP and scholars from the Environmental Research and Learning Centre, Rhodes University.
Maputo Industrial Institute has been around since 1961. It started with very few courses at the time until 2010. By that time it was offering courses on discipline and subjects. From there they are now offering modular courses. Now offering 5 collections industrial mechanics construction plumbing lab technicians. The institute is really interested in the SST programme and they agreed to follow all the procedures so that they could be part of the project.
The project was in progress at the time of reporting.
Change Project: Creation of an Environmental Education Centre to promote native plants with socio-cultural value as a strategy to protect culture and the environment; and curriculum review
Eduardo Mondlane University
In this project a Community of Practice was formed and discussions held. The CoP agreed upon a topic which was: Creation of an Environmental Education Centre to promote native plants with socio-cultural value as a strategy to protect culture and the environment; and curriculum review. The change project had a focus on indigenous knowledge systems and intangible cultural heritage. The project was in progress at the time of reporting.
Eduardo Mondlane University has many faculties and different campuses at graduate and postgraduate levels. They have an environmental club which does a lot of work with schools and communities. The university said that the SST programme will be very valuable for curriculum review.
Matola Industrial Institute
Matola Industrial Institute was established in 1988 and focuses on agriculture. The mission of the institute is focused on agriculture, self-sufficient and work with the partners. As part of their training, students go back to the community to show technologies. The institute was not initially recruited in the SST but requested to be considered to join like many TVET institutions in Mozambique who were initially left out.
An introductory visit was undertaken to the Matola Industrial Institute by the Environmental Learning Research Centre scholars, Previn Chetty and Ben de Souza, was undertaken and the project was in progress at the time of reporting.
Change Project: Ground fertilizing from waste

In this project a Community of Practice was formed and discussions held. The CoP agreed upon a topic which was: Ground fertilizing from waste. The change project had a focus on reducing organic waste and improving the soil quality on the campus. The project was in progress at the time of reporting.

In this project a Community of Practice was formed and discussions held. The CoP agreed upon a topic which was: The nexus of concerns of the SDGs 2030 in a context of educational socio-ecological change: Vegetable planting to regulate the diet of IFP trainees in Cidade De Tete. The change project had a focus on vegetable gardening at the institute to improve the health of the trainees. The project was in progress at the time of reporting.
Change Project: Soil fertilization from household waste

In this project a Community of Practice was formed and discussions held. The CoP agreed upon a topic which was: Soil fertilization from household waste. The change project had a focus on utilizing organic waste to improve soil quality on the campus and surrounding areas. The project was in progress at the time of reporting.

In this project a Community of Practice was formed and discussions held. The CoP agreed upon a topic which was: Environmental sanitation project. The change project had a focus on improving the environmental health of the campus and thereby making it a healthier place for the students and staff. The project was in progress at the time of reporting.
Change Project: Produce vegetables at the institution and use this as a teaching opportunity

In this project a Community of Practice was formed and discussions held. The CoP agreed upon a topic which was: Produce vegetables at the institution and use this as a teaching opportunity. The change project had a focus on producing vegetables to supplement the campus meals and to focus on this as an ESD immersion experience. The project was in progress at the time of reporting.
Change Project: Collection of paper for the production of cooking charcoal (biomass) at the Teacher Training Institute (IFP) in Morrumbala

In this project a Community of Practice was formed and discussions held. The CoP agreed upon a topic which was: Collection of paper for the production of cooking charcoal (biomass) at the Teacher Training Institute (IFP) in Morrumbala. The change project had a focus on decreasing paper waste, preservation of trees (often used to create charcoal) and the provision of charcoal briquettes as an alternative source of fuel. The project was in progress at the time of reporting.
